Rulebook

The rules as written, and the math behind them

How a round becomes a score — and what happens when somebody can’t play.

How rounds are scored

1

All matches are scored on a 24-point system using scoring average of rounds played up through the first six weeks. Thereafter it is a 6-week rolling handicap using your previous 6 weeks scores. As of 2021 there is a 10 shot max score per hole.

2

NEW MEMBERS — ESTABLISHING A HANDICAP

See the math →

A new member with no league handicap from a prior season establishes his handicap one side at a time. His first round on a side sets his handicap for that side — he plays that first round at net par.

Starting in 2027: once he has played three rounds on a single side, that side's average carries over to the other side, so his first round there uses it instead of starting at net par. Whichever comes first — playing both sides, or three rounds on one side — establishes him, and from then on he is on the normal 6-week rolling handicap like everyone else.

3

LOW NET

For a round to be eligible for Low Net, the player must have an established handicap with the league of at least 6 rounds actually played. This mostly affects new players: until they have six rounds in, their handicap is still settling, and a net score built on it isn't a fair comparison.

4

*WORST ROUND

See the math →

A worst round is designed to be punitive and painful to encourage players to avoid using it at all costs. It is defined as your highest nine hole score (while at the same golf course) when looking back over the entire current year for that given side. If there are not yet six completed rounds for that given side within the current year, the most recent occurring scores from that side from the prior season will be used to make six full prior rounds — it never looks back more than one season. If there are duplicate high scores (having the same score total) within the prior scores being analyzed, the most recent occurring instance will be used. Tournament scores, sub-used rounds, and any other worst rounds used are not counted when determining the prior rounds to be used. If there are not six full rounds completed at the current course, as defined above, your worst round will be scored with all triple bogies. The 10 shot max per hole applies to a worst round the same as any other round. When using a worst round, the player's round is not eligible for skins or closest to the pin contests.

When someone can’t play

5

Any player can play as the sub for their absent teammate and use their round to be scored against both opponents' scores. This MUST be announced before the round begins to be allowed. Real person Sub handicaps are determined each and every night they play and are new each time (unless the sub has an established league handicap from the prior year). Real Subs only play in place of the person who they are subbing for and are not re-flighted A or B, before or after the match.

6

MAKE-UP ROUNDS

See the math →

You can make up a round ONLY if the entire foursome agrees to a makeup within that match week. Made up matches must be completed before the end of the day of the next scheduled league night. If your opponents do not agree to participate in a makeup, subs must be used so the round can play as scheduled on Monday. A sub can be the teammate playing a dual card, a real sub playing along with the teammate, or a real sub playing a dual card. If none of these options exist and you haven't been granted a waiver to makeup your round by the officers majority vote due to an exceptional circumstance, then the *worst round will be used. Scores not received by the end of the following league night will result in your match being scored using your *worst round.

7

BAD WEATHER/NOT FINISHING ROUND

See the math →

If a team/player leaves the course mid-round due to quitting or weather or other non-emergency reason, the abandoned holes will be scored based on the players *worst round and using the same *worst round policies as would be used for an entire missed round. If a player leaves the course due to reasonable personal emergency the remaining abandoned holes will be scored such that they lose each remaining hole by 1 stroke but the round itself will not count against their statistics.

8

LEAVING MID-ROUND ON A DUAL CARD

See the math →

If a player covering an absent teammate on a dual card leaves the course mid-round, the holes he completed stand on both cards. The remaining holes on each card are filled from that card's own player's *worst round — the absent teammate's card from the absent teammate's worst round, and his own card from his own.

The same emergency exception as BAD WEATHER/NOT FINISHING ROUND applies: if he leaves for a reasonable personal emergency, the remaining holes on both cards are scored as lost by 1 stroke, and the round does not count against his statistics.

Special weeks

9

CRESTWEED CLASSIC

See the math →

Once a year the mid-year week is the Crestweed Classic, a two-man team scramble. Each team plays one ball: both partners hit, the team picks the better shot, and both play on from there.

Each team gets one MOLE for the round. When a team takes its MOLE, both players re-hit that shot. Normal MOLE rules apply — it can be used on any shot where a putter is not used, never on a putt.

The team handicap is the average of the two partners' handicaps. The difference between the two teams' handicaps is split in half to set the strokes the higher-handicap team receives.

Disputes & final say

DISPUTES

If you suspect your opponent may have improperly scored a hole please confront them at that time not after the match. If someone asks you to verify a score, please don't get mad, just go over the hole with your opponent to verify. Everyone makes a mistake once in awhile. Any disputes that can't be resolved can be brought to the elected league officials where a final decision will be determined via vote.

RULES

If a specific exception is not shown in our league rules above, we shall observe the USGA rules of golf for all other rulings.

FINAL DETERMINATIONS

Any and all rules, exceptional circumstances, and disputes can be brought to the league officers for a decision. The officers will discuss the issue and vote to obtain a majority final decision. The officers majority decision is final and overrides any other conflicting rules.
